Animal Husbandry, it is a state subject matter for which primarily the State Governments are responsible to ensure growth in this sector. However, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has been operating thirty Central Livestock Organizations and allied Institutions for invention and circulation of finer germ plasms for the purpose of genetic upgrading and cross breeding of stocks, to the State Governments. Moreover, the Department is implementing about 11 Centrally Sponsored and Central Sector Schemes for the improvement of essential infrastructure. It is also affixing the efforts put in by the State Governments for attaining the sped up development of the animal husbandry sector.

Few of the programs and schemes promoted by the government are:
Genetic Up-gradation

  • Central Cattle Development Organizations
  • NPCBB (National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding)
Other schemes incorporated by the government are:
  • Poultry development : "Assistance to State Poultry Farms", "Dairy/Poultry Venture Capital Fund"
  • Sheep development : "Assistance to States for modernisation/ improvement of abattoirs and establishment of carcass utilisation centers and primary hide flaying units"
  • Piggery development : "Integrated Piggery Development"
  • Fodder and Feed development: Several Institutes and organizations have been set up that research consistently to reduce the stocks vulnerability to various diseases.
  • Dairy development : "Assistance to Cooperatives is Central Sector Plan Scheme", "Intensive Dairy Development Programme."
  • Fisheries : The organization has been commissioning various input supply production, and infrastructure improvement programs and the welfare-oriented schemes, besides initiating and proposing suitable policies to maximize the production and output of the Fisheries Sector.
