Crop Production

Home   Agriculture Industry Crop Production

Agriculture sector employs nearly 58% of India’s workforce and constitutes 22% of total Indian economy. With sowing building up at a rapid pace for the majority of crops, crop production is also anticipated to increase by 2.5 % during the next financial years to come. The growth in the GDP of agriculture and allied sectors is anticipated at 3.2% during the financial year 2009, as stated by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE).

Plentiful rainfall boosted the kharif sowing. Moreover, the favourable monsoon circumstances and a steady course in the prices of farming commodities resulted in the fast progress of kharif sowing of groundnut, soyabean and cereals.

Moreover, there were special schemes incorporated by the government of India to facilitate crop production or crop development in recent years. These schemes were:

  • Integrated Cereal Development Programme in Wheat based cropping systems areas (ICDP-Wheat)
  • Integrated Cereals Development Programme in Rice based cropping systems areas (ICDP-Rice)
  • Integrated Cereal Development Programme on Coarse Cereals Based Cropping Systems Areas (ICDP-Coarse Cereals),
  • Sustainable Development of Sugarcane Based Cropping System (SUBACS) and Special Jute Development Programme (SJDP)

The main components of the scheme were:

  • Support for the setting up of tube wells accompanied with pump sets
  • Support for pump sets, basically diesel or electric
  • Support for society lift irrigation channels and
  • Support for digging wells in the raised plateau region.

A flourishing crop production depends upon several inter-linked factors. The factors that need special consideration include:

  • Seed bed nature and formulation
  • Seed selection in terms of qualities and varieties
  • Seed handling
  • Seeding technique and suitable timing
  • Exercise of adequate fertilizers
  • Pest control, together with insects, diseases and weeds
