With a climate and soil types conducive enough to raise any variety of crops, India has shown an enormous interest in the development of the horticultural industry. From vegetables to flowers, to fruits and root crops; from medicinal and ornamental plants to tuber crops, to mushrooms, spices and condiments, the horticultural industry has encompassed variety of species of plants into it. This has given it a greater expanse and recognition in the global industry for matching steps with its competitors. Contributing around 18% to the gross agricultural output of the country’s economy, this sector has shown a new path to the agrarian base of the economy of the country.

All these factors have accounted for greater use of the wastelands. The government has also come up with various plans which have boosted the growth of the sector. Around 240 acres of the total wasteland has been put to use. The National Horticulture Board was set up by the government in 1984 for the promotion of an integrated development in this sector. This autonomous unit focuses on coordination, sustenance of production and helps this sector develop a sound infrastructure so as to meet losses through the medium of post harvest management. Besides this the government has also launched technology for the integrated development of this sector. The National Horticulture Mission is motivated towards the full-fledged growth of Horticultural industry in the country and its efforts have brought fruitful results to the same.
